Hello all! Ussually i trade GBP, by trend following system on 30M chart, but now GBP going in range mode, and all indicators are sooo lag. So , this is my adaptation for ranging market.
It's simple system with only few indicators:
Main EMA=144
Additional EMA=72
Tonnel EMA=34(levels+34;-34)
MACD(21,34,5)
Stochastic(13,5,3)
System has 3 mode
mode 1(ranging)
When All EMA's(144,72,34) close to each other, trade only from tonnel borders. Enter when price bounce from border tonnel and stoch crossed up or down, better from overbuy or oversold.

How do you determine when the market is ranging, and using what timeframes?

Distance from EMA 144 and EMA 34 <=15 pips
Timeframe 15 min.

Thank you Nekronfx for your idea, can we say that it is ranging if both of the 2 EMAs are between the +34 and -34 ?

Not exactly, when trend is start price bounce from levels and distance from EMA 34 and EMA 144 rise. In these conditions trade only from levels.

Thanks for this, it looks like this could also be adapted to trending market so you have two market types covered with one method.

Is there a way to apply this method to a 5min timeframe? and how would be the settings like

I don't know how about 5 min, but on 10 min timeframe these settings work good.

you need unzip nekron(tsd).zip from 1-st post, then copy *.mq4 files to
\\program files\MetaTrader 4\experts\indicators
then copy nekron(tsd).tpl into \\program files\MetaTrader 4\templates
then restart metatrader, right click>templates>nekron(tsd)
