Is there some way in mt4 to run a history simulation so you get a simulated tick and trend movement happening for testing an indicator?

Do you mean, backtesting???

to do that, when you open metatrader4, and under the view tab, click "Strategy Tester", that will let you set your parameters on the strategy for adjusting results, set the time, "Open Chart" will let you follow where the trades were taken.
