Anyone can explain how the drawdown % be calculated? I could not do the mathmatics based ona strategy test statement. meanwhile, does a 25% DD qualify a fair enough EA?

Thanks

There are two types of drawdown - Maximium and Relative. If your 25% relates to Maximium d/d, then yes, it is pretty good. If it relates to Relative d/d, then it depends on what your initial account balance was, and whether your account had appreciated (relative to the initial balance) before the 25% d/d - ie. if initial balance was $10,000, then through exceptional trading, it appreciated to $100,000, and you then suffered a 25% d/d - well, then it's bad 'cos this 25% = $25,000, which would have blown a $10,000 dollar account had you started trading just prior to the 25% d/d. Hope this makes sense...

I notice that MT4 report has many components to gauge a system's performance which is confusing to a novice like myself.

May I propose a "Trader's Performance Index" (TPI) ?
which I hope someone in this forum could program or
include as a display on the MT4 platform as part of
forward or backtesting

TPI = %R X (1 - max%DD) X t,

for example 90% return, 30% max DrawDown, 12 months time frame

TPI =0.9 X (1 - 0.3) X 1.2 = 0.756

where t, time in fractions as stated above would be 0.1 = 1 month

Therefore, the longer your record, the higher & better the TPI.

Number of trades would depend on whether the trader/system is a scalper, swing, trend trader, etc, so I would not include that in the TPI calculation which should be as simple and general as possible for gauging the whole portfolio+cash balance at any time.

Why not use this simple evaluation:

___% Intraday Max drawdown from the Highest Banked Balance.

then:

The result should produce a 2:1 Benefit to Risk ratio...

This will insure a benchmark that is floating and always working and will identify a Robust trading method that will never fall back on it's buffer of a banked balance built up...it will need to always produce...

I presumed you were talking about MT Backtest stats. - I hardly ever use the Optimiser. It is almost certainly referring to relative d/d, so imo, you 25% is pretty decent. Just be aware that Metaquotes price-data is (imo) worthless, especially over time period of more than a year! With some pairs this is easy to verify - GBPCHF for instance, often has 50-100 pips difference between the Close->Open of adjacent bars, the result of which is almost any EA will be hugely profitable, unfortunately, it doesn't do this in real life - other pairs are less clear-cut...

So do you know how to program/display simple TPI calculation on the MT4 platform?
