Omelette everything you said is true. Its ok for now for me because I just have a mini account but this is the reason I decided to learn java. As I don't want to rely on Metatrader and all the bucketshops when i have a bigger account.
if you can measure the "values", MT4 is the best. you can use the "values" in it. you do not have to use all parts of it. mql and strategy tester has become good stable levels. core problem is infinite and random complexty of forex market.
ethical level of your broker is another problem.
retail forex is a business and we can not say it is a clean area.
Why don't they do away with making people submit their EAs? If they did, we'd probably see some pretty amazing stuff come out of this.
you never can see a successfull trade model publically. but for a contest, an authority is a must. on the other hand, 3 months is meaningless to measure a system.

The Automated Trading Championship 2008: Registration started!
MetaQuotes Software Corp. is glad to announce that the registration for participation in the Automated Trading Championship 2008 starts on the 1st of July! From now on till the 19th of September, 2008 all persons interested can register for participation in the contest. Participation in the Championship is free.
Expert Advisors that fully comply with the Rules of the Championship are eligible to participate. Here is the comment of Stanislav Starikov, the Championship jury member, regarding the changes in the Championship Rules: "To provide equal conditions to all Participants and to prevent the admission of frauds to the Championship, we had to make the Rules of the Championship even more stringent, as compared to the previous-year contest. We would like to recommend to all the would-be Participants to read the Rules very carefully and not to violate them."
We wish all prospective Participants a successful competition and good luck in the forthcoming Championship!
Sponsors of the ATC 2008 are: FXCM (Forex Capital Markets LLC), Interbank FX LLC (IBFX) and FXDD. Media sponsor is the TRADERS’ magazine. The organizer of the Championship is MetaQuotes Software Corp.

OMG - No Scalping allowed, I never saw that coming!
The only reason Scalping has been disallowed this year is because the "Winwin2007" scalper EA was set to win last years competition outright - right up until Metaquotes was forced to 'interfere' with its operation, stopping it in its tracks (that must have been embarassing Lenar...)
Metatrader brokers will never be taken seriously as long as these type of restrictions exist. If any 'real' broker was to pull a stunt like that, they'd be laughed at (followed by a mass-closure of accounts)...
Quote:
Experts can contain limitations to be used outside the Championship, but they must:
work normally and be tested on the whole interval of year 2008 (for portfolio strategies no history testing is necessary, a simple description will be enough)
work normally in accounts numbered from 600 000 to 650 000
work normally with demo accounts opened on the server of demo.metaquotes.net:443 never use scalping: if the profits in 25% of trades made by the end of the contest are detected to range within the spread, the Participant will be disqualified
make at least 5 conscious trades within the first 8 backtesting months (2008.01.01-2008.08.01) and within 3 months of the contest
properly consider symbol settings without rigidly specified parameters (limitations on lots, spreads, minimal deviation from the market price, etc.)
never contain any critical bugs (like looping or hanging up, etc.) or explicitly harmful actions in the code
be economical with the use of resources on the processor and PC memory

ATC is a competition where we are going to show working trading strategies. Its important, that we do not show how brokers work. Actually we never thought to make a championship to show "how brokers work". We are making research in the field of Automated Trading and making conditions to show the intellectual trading strategies. Thats all.
Be advised, that the Rules in ATC 2008 are much harder. Please read the Rules once again and if you going to participate, please do not break them.
On the website of the Automated Trading Championship 2008, an Interview with Sergey Lyubimov (PhD) has been published. His acquaintance with financial markets began at the times of vouchers and privatization auctions. Today Sergey is the member of a commission of disputes settlement between traders and brokers, as well as the moderator of a popular forum. Sergey is sure that it is possible to become a successful trader, but for this purpose one has to learn a lot:
"If a trader is willing to learn, he must first of all study. But primarily a trader must have common sense and creativity. From my point of view the formal higher education in economics does not play much role here, though general knowledge and acquaintance with mathematical apparatus are undoubtedly advantages."
