I've been a big proponent of fundamental analysis on currencies (former hedge fund analyst, so it's in my blood), but it's something I've been alone on in the forex market. It's always been a lot of research and work to do true fundamental analysis, so most don't do it, but it's invaluable in building my trading systems, particularly carry trades (Interested to hear other's thoughts on this).

If you don't know what I mean by fundamentals, I'm talking about relative strength, equity market strength, that kind of stuff, looked at daily or weekly at a minimum.

Folks, i don't want to sound stupid, and i trust the people on this site, but for two years i have been attempting to understand how and why the market moves. Like this mornings release for the USD. They were not good, and some of the sites are saying the dollar slumped because of this, but when i look at my charts, they show just the opposite. This is something that i have noticed for a long time. Can some one direct me to a source that can explain why this happens. To me the dollar gained strength on this mornings news. If i trade looking at a slump i will lose. Can't figure this one out. HELP!!!!!!!

Buy the rumor / sell the news.

The expectation is that the news will be much worse for the USD. So therefore traders are expecting that the USD will have awful news, thus they sell it in advance of the news.

When the news is officially released and the news turns out that it's bad, but it's not as bad as everyone was expecting that turns out to be a positive for the USD.
